The Genius of QR Codes
A few months ago I stumbled across QR codes, a bar code technology capable of holding several lines of plain text as well as commands to send text messages, make phone calls, and launch web addresses. With the advent of smart phones and good resolution cameras on said phones I think it’s time we impliment this technoloy more.
Example:
The CTA (chicago transit authority) has a “bus tracker” system that gives riders access to the GPS coordinates of buses on their way from computers web-enabled devices. The user interface now works like this:
1. Choose your route Number
2. Choose north or south bound
3. Scroll to the stop location you are currently at (out of a list of hundreds)
4. See the upcoming arrival times for all the stops at that location.
Since the CTA bustracker system is obviously “stop” based and each stop has a unique URL, why not associate a QR code with it? All it would take is a little bit of planning and QR code stickers could be printed up and stuck to their corresponding sign.
Hell, you can even get a pack out 90 UNIQUE stickers from Moo.com for 9.99!
So what do you think? Is this a good idea?
If you have an iphone, android phone, blackberry, or even windows mobile just search in your respective app-store for a QR Code Reader or Bar Code Reader.
Check out these that I’ve made for some more business cards I just ordered:
